This Twittering World, Francis Kyle, London

Every few years, Francis Kyle propose to his stable of British/European representational painters a theme inspiring an eclectic group exhibition. I feared a response to T S Eliot’s “Four Quartets” might risk over-programmatic work, but several artists here really do make this a celebration of the 20th century’s greatest poem, in varied keys: Alain Senez’s large interior/landscape “Sudden in a shaft of light”, including Eliot images of rose petals, children playing, and an accomplished use of fresco to suggest other time frames; Hugh Buchanan’s delicate watercolours of text and image; Peter Milton’s complex, arresting etching “The First Gate”, evoking multi-layered memories in the rose garden at Burnt Norton.
